Sub-Surface Structures.--Underground conduit systems or pipe lines necessarily involve an appreciable expenditure, and it is most important that this portion of the inventory, also, be made with care. An estimate should be made of the cubic yards of excavation involved in the placing of the sub-surface structure in question, the cost of laying piping or conduit, and the cost of backfilling and re-surfacing the excavation. If there is only a small amount of underground construction to be appraised, here again the appraisal data may be set down in sufficient detail in an ordinary notebook. But if there is a large amount of underground conduit, it is better to make use of a standard form in recording the data essential in the appraisal. The form shown in Form 1 (page 229) will be found well suited to this purpose. This form provides not only for the recording of the inventory of the conduit and manholes, but also for that of the underground cables. If the conduit system is extensive, in all probability manholes will be found at intervals of from 300 to 500 feet. Before attempting to use Form 1, a sketch should be made showing the location of the main conduit run, of all manholes, and of all lateral pipes from the manholes to the various buildings or poles. After this sketch is completed, the manholes should be numbered consecutively, and a copy of Form 2 should be filled out for each of the manholes. A sketch of the form under discussion is shown on page 230. In order to illustrate the use of Form 1, I shall consider the inventory of manhole No. 2, assuming that the appraiser has completed a record of manhole No. 1.
